Epilepsy Rescue Medication: Buccal Midazolam
This session explores the use of buccal midazolam as a rescue medication for seizures. Learners must have first attended the Epilepsy Awareness course within the last 12 months prior to completing this course.
There is one competency assessment required for this training. Learners are not deemed competent until they have completed both theory and practical elements. Face to face sessions include the competency assessment, however for those learners attending via MST or online, a practical competency assessment visit will be arranged. Assessment visits can be held at your venue or our training room.
The child does not have to be present for the competency assessment.

Aims of the session
To be able to administer Buccal Midazolam as a rescue medication, safely to a child or young person within your care.
Objectives of the session
- To recognise when to administer Buccal Midazolam
- Recap seizure types
- To demonstrate how to administer Buccal Midazolam safely
- To recognise when it is not appropriate to administer Buccal Midazolam
- To identify whom to contact with concerns.
Teaching and learning strategy
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be facilitated during the theory sessions to include presentations, question and answer sessions, discussion, group work and scenario-based learning withpractical demonstration and practice.
Target audience
Anyone caring for a child or young person in the community setting who has been prescribed Buccal Midazolam.
Delivery format and duration
- Face to face: 1 hour (plus assessment time: 30 minutes per four learners)
- MST: 45 minutes
- Moodle: available for annual update
