Epilepsy Rescue Medication: Buccal Midazolam Refresher
This session is designed to update the learner on what buccal Midazolam is and how to use it as a rescue medication for seizures. Learners must have first attended the Epilepsy Awareness coursewithin the last 12 months prior to completing this course.
There is one competency assessment required for this training. Learners are not deemed competent until they have completed both theory and practical elements. Face to face sessions include the competency assessment, however for those learners attending via MST or online, a practical competency assessment visit will be arranged. Assessment visits can be held at your venue or our training room.
The child does not have to be present for the competency assessment.

- To refresh knowledge and skills regarding administration of buccal Midazolam
Objectives of the session
- Understand what medication Midazolam is
- Know when to administer the medication
- Know how to administer the medication
- Understand the risks involved in administration
Teaching and learning strategy
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be facilitated during the theory session to include presentations, question and answer sessions with scenario-based learning and competency assessment. There is a large emphasis during this session on learner participation.
Target audience
Anyone in a community setting who is caring for a child or young person requiring a pre filled subcutaneous injection to be administered.
Delivery format and duration
- Face to face: 45 minutes (plus assessment time: 30 minutes per four learners)
- MST: 30 minutes
Update requirement
Annual update with one competency assessment either the full Epilepsy Rescue Medication: Buccal Midazolam Awareness course or this Epilepsy Rescue Medication: Buccal Midazolam Refresher course.
