This session aims to ensure that learners caring for a child with a tracheostomy have been trained in the emergency management of the child’s airway. The session focuses on how to deliver basic life support to a young person with a tracheostomy. Learners must have first attended the Tracheostomy Awareness course within the last 12 months prior to completing this course.
There is one competency assessment required for this training, learners are not deemed competent until they have completed both theory and practical elements. Face to face sessions include the competency assessment. The child does not need to be present for the competency assessment.
Please note: If the child / young person is cared for by the Long-Term Ventilation Team, this training will be delivered by the Long-Term Ventilation Team. Additionally, if the young person has a bag and mask method of basic life support, training should be sought from the Long-Term Ventilation Team.
