Epilepsy Awareness
This session aims to raise awareness and understanding of epilepsy, how it may affect the child or young person and how to respond to epileptic seizures.

Aims of the session
- To have an understanding of epilepsy
- To understand how epilepsy will affect the person and how to care for them
- Risks
Objectives of the session
- Briefly explain what epilepsy is, and how a seizure occurs
- Discuss some of the most common types of seizure
- Describe what to do if somebody has a seizure (seizure first aid)
- Be aware of how epilepsy may affect learning and mood
- Risk assessment and considerations with epilepsy, relating to care planning
- Whom to contact for further information / advice.
Teaching and learning strategy
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be facilitated during the theory session to include presentations, question and answer sessions with scenario-based learning.
Target audience
Anyone caring for a child or young person in a community setting who has been diagnosed with an epilepsy.
Delivery format and duration
- Face to face: 2 hours
- MST: 2 hours
- Moodle: available for annual update
Update requirement
Annual update (either attend this course again, or the Epilepsy Awareness Refresher).
