What To Expect: Practical Skill Assessment

If you do not see the course you require, please contact us to discuss your needs.

For general enquiries regarding our training or bookings please email: ChildrensNursing@nottshc.nhs.uk

5 Steps to booking training

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

  • Download and complete our referral form.
  • Ensure you select the correct courses and assessments if required and attach a completed consent form for any child whom we will have to see as part of the assessment (see ‘Course Description’ for details).
  • If you are aware of any additional needs that your learners may have, please indicate this on the referral form.

Step 4

Step 5

  • Await confirmation of your requested training, or triage contact (see below).
  • If requesting training via Moodle, each learner will be sent an email from LMS Management with login details. The learner will be enrolled on the requested course immediately and has 28 days to complete the course.

Triage

If you are referring in for Gastrostomy, Gastrojejunal, Nasogastric, Subcutaneous Injection or Tracheostomy subjects you will need to send a completed consent form along with your referral form as specified above.

Your referral will then be passed to one of the Community Children’s Training Team Community nurses.

The nurse will gather further information from you regarding assessment times and ensure you are aware of what information you may need prior to your training and assessments. Your referral will then be processed once the nurse has gathered all the relevant information.

Please note: there is an expectation that you will engage in the referral process and your referral will be stopped if you do not return our attempts at contact.

Training delivery

Training can be delivered in a range of formats to suit your needs utilising theory, scenario-based learning, and practical experience to enhance our training.

We recommend a face-to-face session when first accessing training, and every third year thereafter.

Face to face

  • Delivered at our venue or yours, this provides opportunities to ask questions in a classroom environment, participate in group work and practical hands-on experience.
  • This format is recommended for learners who are new to the subject.
  • For some subjects there will be the opportunity to complete the first competency assessment.

Microsoft Teams

  • Learners are sent a link for training via email which will allow them to log on and participate in theory training via Microsoft Teams.
  • A range of techniques are used to enhance engagement during the session.
  • We do not recommend this format if you are wishing to attend Gastrostomy, Nasogastric or Tracheostomy training for the first time.

Moodle

  • This e-learning comprises of modules which the learner works through at their own pace, with a quiz at the end of the course to confirm learning.
  • Moodle is recommended for learners who are repeating training for their annual updates, and not for first time attendees.
  • The learner should be comfortable using computers to get the best experience from their learning.

Workshops

  • These are available for Medication Administration Awareness (including Controlled Drugs) and Gastrostomy/Gastrojejunal Awareness including Blended Diet courses.
  • Workshops are held at our venue, 9.30am-2pm. Theory is delivered during the morning with the afternoon set aside for practical hands-on experience and opportunity to complete the first competency assessment.

Bespoke

  • For some settings, such as local special education schools and social care settings, we are able to deliver bespoke training sessions and full days of training where we cover multiple sessions, in house.
  • Please contact us at ChildrensNursing@nottshc.nhs.uk if you wish to enquire about this.

Competency assessment delivery

Some subjects require competency assessments.

Our Course Descriptions will explain if an assessment is required. There are three types of assessment: -

Face-to-face with child

  • These are required for subjects where the learner must be seen completing the skill with a child.
  • It is the referrer’s responsibility to ensure that both the learner and the child are available for assessment times.
  • For these assessments we need a consent form completing and sending with your referral so that we have consent to see the child. The consent form can be found on our website.

Face-to-face without child

  • These are required for some subjects where the learner must be observed completing the skill but does not need to do this on a child.
  • If receiving this training face to face, the assessment will be completed during the theory session.
  • If receiving this training via MST or Moodle, an appointment will be required for the learner to complete their competency assessment.

Scenario-based (for annual learners only)

  • This option is only available for those learners who are attending training for their annual update, have previously been signed off as competent via Face-to-Face with Child assessments and who practice the skill regularly.
  • This option is also only available for the Medication Administration (including controlled drugs) and
  • Gastrostomy Awareness (including Gastrojejunal) subjects.
  • Following completion of the theory learners will have a short one to one session with the nurseassessor who will provide written and practical scenarios to confirm the learner remains competent.

Competency explained

For all subjects where there is the requirement that a competency element be completed, the learner is not deemed competent to practice that skill alone until both the theory and the competency assessments have
been completed.

The learner will receive paperwork signed by the Nurse Assessor to confirm they have been deemed competent and at this point the learner is deemed to have sufficient skills to complete the task independently.
