Gastrostomy Button Device Balloon Water Change
This session is designed to give children’s residential care staff the knowledge and skills they need to be able to safely change the water in a gastrostomy balloon device.
Devices covered with this training are: balloon button devices (MINI, MINI ONE, MIC-KEY) only.
There is one competency assessment required for this training which is completed on the manikin. Learners are not deemed competent until they have completed both theory and practical elements. The competency assessment will be completed during the theory session if delivered face to face. Competency assessments must be completed within three months of theory training.
Once competency assessment has been passed, the learner is considered competent to complete a balloon water change for any balloon device.

Aims of the session
- To develop knowledge of why the balloon water of a gastrostomy button device needs routinely changing and when the procedure needs to be carried out.
- To learn the skills to safely change the balloon water of a gastrostomy button device.
Objectives of the session
- Identify how a gastrostomy button device is held in place and recognise key device features used for a balloon water change
- Recognise why and when a child’s gastrostomy device may require a balloon water change
- Consider associated risks and what action to take
- Demonstrate how to carry out the balloon water change safely
Teaching and learning strategy
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be facilitated during the theory sessions to include presentations, question and answer sessions, discussion, group work and scenario-based learning.

This session is only available for staff working in a children’s residential care setting.

Update requirement
Annual update with one competency assessment on the manikin is recommended.
