Gastrostomy Awareness including Blended Diet Refresher
This session is designed to update learners on gastrostomy care skills including feeding, care of the site, venting and problem solving.
As learners will have previously completed competency in this area. Learners will require one competency assessment following attendance at a Refresher session. Learners have the option to choose either a face-to-face competency assessment where they will be observed feeding the child, or they will be able to complete a scenario-based competency assessment.

Aims of the session
- To refresh understanding of how to care for someone with a gastrostomy device.
Objectives of the session
- To understand how to care for a young person with a gastrostomy including: -
- Care of site and device
- Feeding
- Venting
- Problem solving
Teaching and learning strategy
A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be facilitated during the theory session to include presentations, question and answer sessions with scenario-based learning. There is a large emphasis during this session on group work and learner participation.
Target audience
Anyone in a community setting who is caring for a child or young person requiring a pre filled subcutaneous injection to be administered.
Delivery format and duration
This session is only suitable for learners who have previously attended the Gastrostomy Awareness including Blended Diet course and now need to complete their annual update session.

- MST: 1 hour
Update requirement
Annual update (either attend this course again, or the full course Gastrostomy Awareness including Blended Diet) with one competency assessment (either face to face or scenario based).
