Gastrostomy Awareness including Blended Diet and Gastrojejunal Feeding Workshop
This session is designed to provide learners with information about gastrostomy devices, stoma care, different feeding methods and trouble shooting. The morning will be spent completing the theory, with the afternoon allowing for practical experience using our manikins, feeding equipment and pumps. The workshop practical experience gives the learner the opportunity to complete their first competency assessment, meaning the learner may only require one further assessment at their venue.
Devices covered with this training are: balloon button devices (MINI, MINI ONE, MIC-KEY) and PEG. If the young person has a gastrojejunal device, the learner will require Gastrojejunal Awareness in addition to this course, which can be covered during the workshop on request.
There are a minimum of two competency assessments required for this training. Learners are not deemed competent until they have completed both theory and practical elements. The first competency assessment can be completed during the afternoon practical experience, however further competency assessments need to be booked at the learner’s venue with the child or young person present in order for the nurse assessors to observe the learner using the device. Competency assessments must be completed within three months of theory training.
Once competency assessments have been passed, the learner is considered competent to care for
any child with a gastrostomy device.
