This session is designed to provide learners with the information that they need in order to safely administer controlled medication to the children and young people within their care.
The learner must first attend the Medication Administration Awareness course before completing this course.
There are a minimum of two competency assessments required for this training. Learners are not deemed competent until they have completed both theory and practical elements. Competency assessments need to be booked at the learner’s venue with the child or young person present in order for the nurse assessors to observe the learner administering medication. Competency assessments must be completed within three months of theory training.
Once competency assessments have been passed, the learner is considered competent to administercontrolled medication to any child.
If attending the Medication Administration Awareness Refresher course, the learner will have a choice of either once face to face competency assessment, or a scenario based assessment.

A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be facilitated during the theory session to include presentations and question and answer opportunities.
This session is suitable for anyone caring for a child who requires controlled medication to be administered while in their care.
Annual update with one competency assessment (either face to face or scenario based).
