Trust's respiratory nurses shortlisted for Nursing Times Award
The Trust's respiratory nurses have been shortlisted at the Nursing Times Awards 2018. The prestigious awards celebrate innovations that are improving nurse-led care throughout the NHS and independent healthcare sector.
The Respiratory Specialist Nurses, who work tirelessly to improve the health of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients across Mansfield and Ashfield, have been shortlisted in the Respiratory Nursing category.
Since 2017, the team has supported patients who have been discharged from hospital, keeping them safe and providing care for them and support for their families in their own homes. This has allowed them to deliver high standards of care with the involvement of patients and their families.
The team also work in GP practices supporting primary care partners when treating and diagnosing patients with COPD, allowing them to provide education and be a resource to practices.
Through this work they have provided education around the correct way to use inhalers, promoting self-management, keeping active and referring to their local pulmonary rehabilitation programme and the breathe easy support group.
The team also support their colleagues in care homes and provide an in-reach service for patients who are unable to access their surgeries. The team’s focus has been around enabling care home staff to deliver a respiratory focussed level of care.
Hiedi Swift, Respiratory Specialist Nurse said, “We never thought for a moment that we would be shortlisted for a Nursing Times Award.
We have met and worked with some wonderful patients and their families to ensure their diagnoses are correct, and the treatment plans are in line with current guidelines and delivered at a Gold-standard quality. Our patients deserve the very best we can offer.”
Julie Attfield, Executive Director of Nursing, commented:
"It’s fantastic news to be nominated for a Nursing Times awards again this year.
"We consistently strive to overcome challenges in order to deliver high quality care and the team have really helped to improve outcomes for our patients and service users. They should feel very proud of this achievement.”
Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 31 October.
