SAS Week - Dr Nidhi Shashidhar
Dr Nidhi Shashidhar shares her experience on transitioning to being a SAS doctor in the UK and how it has been a major shift, particularly coming from a background of practicing medicine in India and the UAE. She describes the transition as both challenging and rewarding, with each day bringing new opportunities to learn and grow.
Being a SAS doctor in the UK has been a significant transition for me, especially coming from my background of practising medicine in India and the UAE. In my first year as a SAS doctor in the UK working in a rehabilitation centre and acute inpatient ward, I encountered challenges that tested my adaptability, but I was fortunate to have an incredibly supportive team of SAS doctors by my side.
Navigating the NHS's unique protocols and guidelines was initially overwhelming, yet my fellow SAS doctors were always there to guide me through the complexities. Establishing relationships within this well-established team has been a rewarding experience, as everyone has been eager to help me find my footing as a SAS doctor. The transition to greater autonomy is both exciting and a bit daunting, but the encouragement from my peers made it easier to trust my instincts in my role as a SAS doctor. I truly appreciate the collaborative spirit of the SAS team, which has made this journey not only manageable but also enjoyable.
Beyond the support, I’ve discovered a refreshing work-life balance in the UK that allows me, as a SAS doctor, the flexibility to work, learn, and pursue further qualifications. This environment fosters continuous professional development, and I’m eager to explore all the opportunities available to me.
I’m particularly excited about the chance to delve into various specialties and enhance my clinical skills. The structure of my role gives me the freedom to pursue my interests and take on new challenges, which keeps me motivated and engaged. I’m committed to my growth and development as a SAS doctor, and I feel empowered to shape my career trajectory. With the encouragement from my SAS team, I look forward to evolving as a doctor and making meaningful contributions to the NHS, knowing that every step I take as a SAS doctor brings me closer to my professional goals.
