SAS Week - Dr Rahman
This week, we celebrate our diverse SAS (Specialty and Specialist) doctors for their vital roles in patient care and recovery. They concentrate on direct patient interactions, possess unique responsibilities separate from consultants or trainees, and actively engage in teaching, research, and leadership.
Firstly we hear from Dr Arif Rahman, a doctor specialising in psychiatry who has dedicated his career to improving mental health services and ensuring that all patients receive compassionate, comprehensive care. He shares his experience with us below:
As an SAS Psychiatry doctor at Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, I have found my career both rewarding and fulfilling. The role provides an excellent work-life balance, allowing me to focus on my professional development while still having time for personal pursuits. There are numerous career development opportunities within the Trust, making it an ideal environment to grow and thrive.
The Trust has been incredibly supportive of my professional growth, particularly by offering me the chance to complete a 6-month Approved Clinician (AC) course through a university. I am currently in the final stages of compiling my portfolio and look forward to applying for Approved Clinician status upon its completion. Several of my colleagues have followed a similar path and successfully transitioned into consultant roles, further demonstrating the vast potential for career progression as an SAS doctor.
Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust also invests in the development of its SAS doctors through regular SAS events and a wide range of educational opportunities. These sessions have been invaluable in helping me stay up to date with both physical health skills and the latest advancements in mental health care.
Overall, choosing a career as an SAS doctor has been a fantastic decision. It offers a unique combination of professional development, work-life balance, and opportunities to pursue becoming an AC or entering the GMC Specialist Register via CESR. I highly recommend it to anyone considering a career in psychiatry.
