Sherwood Oaks is Nottinghamshire Healthcare’s new purpose built hospital for people experiencing acute mental illness which opened in December 2022.
The hospital has 70 beds across four, single sex wards providing single person ensuite accommodation and includes a hospital-based place of safety (Section 136 suite) for people over the age of 18. There is also plenty of outdoor and dedicated therapy space.
Patients have moved to Sherwood Oaks from Blossomwood at King’s Mill Hospital as it undergoes a redevelopment programme, and from Ward B2 at Bassetlaw Hospital, which has now closed.
Sherwood Oaks offers improved environments for patients, their families and carers and the staff who provide services. Now, any adult from the local Mid Notts and Bassetlaw area who needs an inpatient stay will be referred to Sherwood Oaks.
During spring 2023, work will begin in the allotment area, located in the hospital grounds. Patients, staff and volunteers will be creating a further therapeutic area in which a wild meadow, fresh vegetables and seating areas will be developed.
Sherwood Oaks has four acute mental health wards:
Beech Ward (17 bedded female Acute ward) Tel: 01623 702087
Fir Ward (17 bedded female Acute ward) Tel: 01623 702084

Our wards provide inpatient care for people experiencing an acute crisis relating to their mental health who cannot be supported in their own home.
Our service focuses on assessment of need, treatment and recovery. We place the service user at the centre of their care planning.
Our service is for people aged between 18 - 65. Those over 65 who have already been accessing mental health services may also be referred.
We provide a place of safety for patients detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act. Our service users are typically brought to us by the police for a full and proper assessment of their mental health needs. Our new 136 suite is designed to ensure that our service user’s privacy and dignity is maintained at all times.
Our assessments can lead to a voluntary or compulsory hospital admission or discharge into the community with appropriate signposting and mental health service follow up. Our service is available every day, 24 hours a day.
The 136 suite does not have set visiting times however visits can be arranged with the team by calling the below phone number.
