Welcome to this special edition of Information Spotlight which highlights the services provided by NHS England for social care staff throughout the Midlands and East of England.

Featured in the newsletter are details about the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub and how to access it, along with practical advice around how to register for an OpenAthens account. Over the page is further information on some specific resources accessible to social care staff.

Funded by NHS England, the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub connects users to high-quality knowledge and evidence resources in one place.

With a OpenAthens account you have full access to the NHS core resources:

  • Journals, ebooks and databases
  • Clinical decision support resources including NICE Guidelines and BMJ Best Practice
  • Policy / management information and research literature
  • One-click links to full-text articles

Click on Start your search from the homepage and sign in with your OpenAthens account details.

Register for OpenAthens

OpenAthens is an authenticated single-point of access to online information resources purchased by the NHS. It acts as a key to unlocking these resources.

Registering for OpenAthens will provide you with a username and password which enables access to a wide range of quality evidence online, including:

  • BMJ Best Practice
  • E-book Central
  • Healthcare databases (e.g. Medline,EMBASE, CINAHL)
  • Kortext e-books
  • NHS Knowledge and Library Hub

To register for OpenAthens, complete an onlineform at: OpenAthens | Registration (nice.org.uk)

In the Organisation field enter Social Care, then scroll down and select ‘Social Care staff in the Midlands and East of England’. It is important that you register with your work e-mail if possible as otherwise it can be difficult to verify eligibility.

Once registered you can access resources in oneplace at the NHS Knowledge and Library Hub.

An OpenAthens account will also give you access to social care specific resources on e-learning for healthcare (e-lfh)

Just select ‘Sign on with OpenAthens’ from the login page: NHSE elfh Hub (e-lfh.org.uk)
