Mental Health Treatment Requirement (MHTR)

MHTRs are one of three treatment requirement options available under the Community Sentence Treatment Requirement (CSTR) Framework; Drug Rehabilitation Requirements (DRRs) and Alcohol Treatment Requirements (ATRs) being the other two options.

Primary Care Mental Health Treatment Requirements (MHTRs) are for individuals whose mental health issues do not reach the threshold of secondary care services. They have been designed to improve the offer to divert people with mental health problems towards treatment and support.

The specialist team includes:

  • Clinical Lead Psychologist
  • Specialist Mental Health Practitioner
  • Senior Assistant Psychologist
  • Research Assistant

Who we work with?

MHTRs are for adults (aged 18 years or above) who:

  • Have pleaded guilty or be found guilty after trial.
  • Have committed an offence that falls within the Community or Suspended Sentence Order range.
  • Have mild to moderate mental health needs, such as depression, anxiety, dual diagnosis (with drug or alcohol issues), personality disorder, neurodiversity, trauma, abuse, and a range of social issues.

The individual must give consent and agree to engage in assessment, intervention and information sharing protocols.

The service works with people who have a GP registered in Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County.

Aims

To offer a clear, timely and accessible pathway to psychological treatment for individuals with mild to moderate mental health difficulties; to be delivered as a requirement of a court ordered community sentence.

More specifically aims of the service include:

  • To improve health outcomes by providing evidence-based interventions.
  • To reduce offending/reoffending by improving the health and social outcomes.
  • To provide effective alternatives to short custodial sentences by providing access to mental health treatment which addresses the underlying cause of the offending behaviours.
  • To provide timely and accessible services which enable and promote engagement for individuals with a wide range of needs.
  • Supporting early sentencing, or as advised by the court, by providing rapid assessments to inform pre-sentence reports.
  • Enabling access to statutory community services through the provision of individualised both during and after community sentence.

How to refer

Please contact us on 0115 952 9400 or via email: MHTR@nottshc.nhs.uk if you wish to discuss a possible referral to our service.

Once accepted for treatment and an MHTR sentence has been passed, we will work closely with probation in supporting the individual to engage. We will work with the individual for up to 12 sessions of 1:1 psychological intervention, informed by the assessment formulation and tailored to meet the service user’s needs.

Interventions will typically include psycho education around common mental health difficulties e.g. depression, anxiety, trauma and grief, supporting the development of healthy coping strategies to better manage difficulties and provide space to practice coping techniques and a forum for discussion on their effectiveness.
