We are delighted that Niaomi Maiden, Trainee Nursing Associate, has been shortlisted for Nursing Associate Trainee of the Year at the Student Nursing Times Awards.
The awards celebrate the next generation of nurses, as well as the NHS trusts, universities, lecturers and supervisors who support them during their studies.
Niaomi, a student at the University of Derby, was shortlisted for her work at Wathwood Hospital, a medium secure mental health hospital in Rotherham.
During the COVID-19 pandemic she led on a complex case, supporting a patient to move from Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to Adult Mental Health Services at the hospital. Typically, transitions can be challenging for the staff, patients and carers involved but Niaomi worked collaboratively, ensuring the care remained patient-focused throughout the move.
Niaomi was nominated by Dr Joanne Parry, Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist. In the nomination, Dr Parry said: “Niaomi’s knowledge and understanding in her field of expertise is unrivalled. She is kind, caring, passionate, patient-focused, dependable, trustworthy and knowledgeable. All her colleagues believe she is special, but most importantly, our patients believe it too.”
Anne-Maria Newham, Executive Director of Nursing AHPs and Quality, said: “I am thrilled that Niaomi has been shortlisted in the Student Nursing Times Awards. She works incredibly hard supporting the patients at Wathwood Hospital and has shown a real commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care, despite the challenges. She thoroughly deserves this recognition and I wish her lots of luck for the next stage.”
Niaomi said: “I am delighted and proud to be acknowledged and shortlisted. It was such a lovely and unexpected surprise; it brought a tear to my eye! I am extremely grateful to work within such a supportive environment, and with amazing people who all work collaboratively to ensure the highest quality, person-centred care. I wish the best of luck to everyone shortlisted across all the categories.”
Winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 27 May. Visit https://studentawards.nursingtimes.net/snta/en/page/home for more information.
