What is a Chief Investigator (CI)?

The Chief Investigator (CI) is the person designated overall responsibility for a research study. This includes the design, conduct and reporting of a study.

The Trust has a SOP defining how and when the sponsor and CI will agree the duties and responsibilities that are delegated to the CI by the sponsor

If the Trust is the sponsor, the CI must have a substantive or honorary contract with the Trust.

For funded research, the CI would be expected to be the grant-holder (lead applicant).

Further information on CI responsibilities is available in the UK Policy Framework for Health and Social Care Research.

Please contact research@nottshc.nhs.uk if you are interested in finding out more information about becoming a CI.
