Gastrostomy Awareness including Blended Diet

This session is designed to provide learners with information about gastrostomy devices, stoma care and different feeding methods. There will be time spent looking at trouble shooting.

Devices covered with this training are: balloon button devices (MINI, MINI ONE, MIC-KEY) and PEG.

If the young person has a gastrojejunal device, the learner will require Gastrojejunal Awareness in addition to this course.

There are a minimum of two competency assessments required for this training. Learners are not deemed competent until they have completed both theory and practical elements. Competency assessments need to be booked at the learner’s venue with the child or young person present in order for the nurse assessors to observe the learner using the device.Competency assessments must be completed within three months of theory training.

Once competency assessments have been passed, the learner is considered competent to care for any child with a gastrostomy device.

Please note: on receiving a referral for this training a nurse from the Training Team will contact the referrer to gain further details. Prior to completing this course it is useful for learners to know what device the child or young person they are caring for has. Prior to competency assessments it is necessary for each setting to ensure they have a feeding care plan from a dietitian in place.
